Concordia’s Model United Nations Club (CMUNC) is a student group at Concordia University of Alberta which gives politically-minded students an opportunity to experience international relations in a series of realistic simulations. Every year our club attends an annual conference in Alberta. Our students come back from these conferences enriched with a deeper understanding of international issues.
CMUNC also provides a platform for students to develop skills in debate, public speaking, and conflict resolution. These students become leaders in their classrooms and community, setting them on a path to become influential leaders. They also bring attention and prestige to Concordia and the Edmonton area on an international platform. CMUNC is a valuable part of the Concordia community. Although small, our club represents a diverse group of students from the business, education, arts and science faculties, and it is rapidly growing.
In 2016-2017 academic year CMUNC will be sending eight students to attend the National Model UN (NMUN) Conference in Kobe, Japan. They will be representing the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and the Republic of Turkey and will discuss in committee the issues of nuclear disarmament, empowerment of women and girls in conflict, and plans for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals that were laid out in the Rio+20 Outcome Document, "The Future We Want".
For the first time, Concordia will be hosting the Alberta Inter-Collegiate Model UN (AIMUN) Conference in March of 2017. University students from across the province and Western Canada will come to Concordia to simulate the UN-Habitat Committee on the topic of building Sustainable cities and reducing global poverty.
