Storwell's Bursary Program provides additional support for former foster children and youth in care.
For those pursuing post-secondary education, options for support among former foster children and youth in care are limited. Once these individuals age out of care, they find themselves in a vulnerable position with few scholarships or bursaries specifically aimed at their demographic. In response to this support void, Storwell Self Storage initiated the Storwell Foster Children Bursary Program over a decade ago. This bursary has been instrumental in assisting foster children in achieving their educational aspirations and easing the financial strain associated with post-secondary education. Although a significant number of former foster children express a desire to attend post-secondary school, only a minimal percentage ultimately secure a degree. Out of every 1,000 youths in Canadian foster care, merely eight graduate with a post-secondary education. A primary barrier to entry for children in foster care is the financial burden that comes along with post-secondary education. This burden is felt particularly strongly by Indigenous children, who continue to be overrepresented in the foster care system. Statistics Canada's 2021 census data shows Indigenous children accounted for 53.8% of all children in foster care. This has gone up slightly from the 2016 census, which found 52.2% of children in care under the age of 14 were Indigenous. More than 3% of Indigenous children living in private households in 2021 were in foster care compared to the 0.2% of non-Indigenous children. Nationally, Indigenous children accounted for 7.7% of all children 14 years of age and younger. In recent years, there has been a significant push from Indigenous leaders and child welfare advocates across the country to address the myriad systemic issues contributing to the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in care. An additional hurdle that foster children must overcome in their pursuit of post-secondary education is the stigma associated with growing up in the foster care system, which stops many students from reaching out and asking for the assistance that they require. Hopefully, as more financial initiatives become available and education about foster care becomes more widespread, this stigma will begin to dissipate, and foster children and youth in care will be able to receive the attention and support that they deserve. Storwell's Foster Children Bursary Program aims to provide former foster children and youth in care with additional financial support so that they are able to pursue their post-secondary education and work towards building a better life for themselves. The annual bursary is for $2,000 and can be used towards all educational expenses, including but not limited to, tuition fees. Concordia Students' Association members who were once part of the foster care system and are currently enrolled as full-time students at the university are more than welcome to apply. Eligibility requirements and access to the application form can be found at: https://www.storwell.com/bursary-application |
